Dr. Duncan IWC:100 Date The Cu Chi Tunnels Mortar explosions echoed like thunder throughout the dense vegetation of the Vietnamese jungle. Allied forces pounded the area relentlessly trying to exterminate the Vietcong resistance. The once pristine meadow surrounded by a thick wall of the jungle now looked like looked like the surface of the moon: cratered, desolate, and lifeless. With the above ground destroyed, there was only one place for the Vietcong to go and that was below, deep in the cold earth, so that weapons of the Americans couldn’t hurt them. It is here where they dug in and continued fighting until the American army was forced to surrender. Years after the war, many of these historic battlegrounds have been forgotten and much of the land has healed its scars. However, the Cu Chi Tunnels still stand as a reminder of those that fought the war, and as a reminder of what happened above the ground as well as below. The historical significance of this site is not comparable to any other in mod ern warfare history. This place is a historical monument that embodies the idea of warfare. However, it can also add closure to those who fought in the war and for those who had lost loved ones due to the conflict.
